Friend since 6th grade
This wildly beautiful girl and I have officially known each other since we were 11 years young. Can I get a what, what?!? Throughout our friendship, some of our biggest triumphs have included: putting on epic dance routines (in front of the entire 6th grade); being each others paint buddies, during all stages of life; talking each other off the ledge when boys insisted on getting the best of us (that was mostly her helping me); driving more miles than any two people ever should, often times “just to think”; and providing each other with a constant stream of songs that became the soundtracks of our lives. Lauren was my rock in college and she will forever be that friend that is simply part of who I am. Oh, you can also now add "being each other's MOHs" to the friendship resume! :)
Lauren lives in Fort Worth with her husband Cory and their two furry babies, Mav & Chloe.
Friend since freshman year of high school
Kaylie and I met in Biology, my freshman year of high school- her sophomore year- and we pretty much managed to stay glued to each other until she graduated and left me to go to Abilene Christian. I’m still a little bitter, if you can’t tell. Simply put, 90% of my high school memories include her and even as the years have gone by, she has always remained a true friend who I know will never let time or distance get between us! Random fact about my friendship with Kaylie: we were actually in a small boating accident together, years ago. I came out with a bump on my head and she had a pretty bad concussion that literally knocked her into ADD- maybe it wasn’t the accident, but if I remember correctly, she was not medicated pre-accident and definitely had prescribed ADD meds, after the accident. Thank you for still being my friend!
Kaylie lives in North Richland Hills (almost Fort Worth), with her hubby JR and their almost 18 month old, Annabelle! The Ford's are expecting their 2nd bundle of joy the week of October 17th, so stay tuned to see if momma makes it to the wedding!
Friend since freshman year of high school
My story with Maggie would sound a little similar to my story with Kaylie…mostly because it’s the exact same one. I met both of them in the same Biology class, my freshman year of high school, they were both a year older, we were all attached at the hip and Maggie also left me to go to college (I vow to get over it one day, ha). My young, innocent years (that’s what I like to tell myself) would have been completely different without her (that, I don’t have to tell myself). She was always a voice of reason for me and set a great example for how to overcome difficult times with a good attitude. I am lucky that her beautiful china doll face has put up with me, after all these years.
Maggie recently moved from Lubbock to College Station with her husband Brian and their 18 month old daughter, Myka. Hooray for leaving the wild west for Aggieland!!! :)
Friend since 9th grade
Mary and I first met my freshman year of high school, her sophomore year. We actually went to the same church- therefore, were in the same youth group- but we really “met” through the church that both of our (at the time) boyfriends attended. After we, both, ditched those dudes, Mary and I continued to stay really involved in our own church and that- mixed with student council activities, our mutual love of soccer, and our similar senses of humor- helped us become great friends! Our friendship didn’t skip a beat when she moved to Georgetown, after high school, to attend Southwestern, and even when she temporarily moved to the Dominican republic (for an “international teaching gig”- but mostly to give her relationship with her Dominican man a shot), we still kept in touch and reaffirmed that we were destined to be lifelong friends.
Mary lives in Austin with her husband Felix and their furry, very energetic, baby, Hallett.
Friend since 11th grade
Stephanie (aka Dew or Dewie) and I became friends our junior year of high school, only because we had lunch together and she would constantly make fun of me for taking so long to prepare my baked potatoes. We quickly realized we had the same sarcastic, dramatic and sometimes crude (but extremely charming) sense of humor, so our friendship blossomed quickly. Her going away to Sam Houston to study theater, somehow didn’t make us skip a beat and throughout college we got to be closer than ever. The little drama queen (literally) is the most talented singer and actress you will ever meet, so thanks to her I’ve been exposed to a lot of great shows (that she has performed in) and she has always made sure that we never have a dull moment.
Stephanie and her fiancé Taylor are getting hitched 2 weeks before me and John, at which point they will be living in The Woodlands!
Friend since freshman year at A&M
Erin and I met in a freshman math class at A&M, but we realized about 10 minutes into knowing each other that we were both architecture majors. Long walks from our math class to the architecture building, along with being put in the same studio sophomore year, helped us spark a quick friendship, but the good stuff didn’t come until we became roommates in Spain, during our semester-long study abroad. To this day, she is the only female that I have ever shared a room with and for that she deserves a freakin’ metal (or a hug). Aside from living and traveling all around Europe together, we also managed to survive the most traumatic architecture studio together, senior year, which created a bond that will last a lifetime. As if that weren’t enough…Erin also introduced me to the architecture firm that I currently work for (because she works there too), so I basically owe her my career and my entire wedding fund ;)
Erin lives in Arlington with her husband Jeff and their new pups, Rev and Raider (bet you can’t guess where Jeff went to school).
Friend since sophomore year at A&M
Ashton and I met my sophomore year at A&M, through The Big Event- the largest, student-run service project in the nation- just sayin’. We were made partners in the organization and we pretty much hit it off from day one. We became infamous for being the partners that were entirely too attached to each other and at some point, just conceded to calling each other “girlfriend.” It probably didn’t help that for a couple of years, I found it entirely entertaining to dance on Ashton at all kinds of social events. One of my fondest memories of college will forever be dancing and singing with Ashton, at the bottom of an empty pool- with a broom as a prop, for some reason- while spectators looked on with horror and amusement (mostly amusement). College just wouldn’t have been the same without this girl.
Ashton lives in Houston with her beautiful fur child named Riggins.
Friend since junior year at A&M
Christina and I were both architecture majors at A&M, but the first time I ever spoke a word to her was at the Houston airport, shortly before we hopped on a plane to go to Barcelona for a semester. Interestingly enough, the early stages of our friendship included a rather heated confrontation, but maybe that bump in the road only managed to build some kind of twisted bond of respect because we have been great friends ever since. Much like with Erin, Christina and I also got to travel to a lot of places in Europe together and our crazy adventures abroad are what defined a lot of our friendship. Once we came back from Barcelona, Christina and I continued to make lifetime memories (aka terrible decisions that make for crazy stories) and she has always been someone I can count on, no matter what.
Christina and her fiancé Casey live in College Station and are full-time parents to Casey’s three adorable girls: Katelyn and the twins, Ellie and Piper.
Friend since John came into the picture
Jessica, my future sister-in-law, and I met the same night John and I had our first kiss, so you could definitely say that she’s been part of my relationship all along. That fateful first night that we hung out, we hit things off right away! As most of you know, John and I had very unique circumstances surrounding the beginning of our relationship, but from day one (ha, literally) Jessica took it upon herself to reassure me that John was being truthful about his complicated past and that he was every bit as crazy about me as I suspected (hoped) he was. Jessica and Brad, both, have always gone out of their way to make me feel welcomed and supported and I will forever be thankful. They were truly heaven sent and I'm excited to officially get to call them family! HERE'S TO THE HICKS CHICKS!!!! :D
Jessica and her husband Brad (John's brother) live in Houston with their tiny trio of weirdos: Hudson (aka Huddy or John's mini-me), Wren & Jessie.
Wren just turned 4 years old in July, but she's going on 16. She's a free spirit, marches to the beat of her own drum, sings more than she talks, likes anything princess related, has a heart of gold and she's officially the first little girl to ever steal my heart.
Jessie will be 2 in December. She enjoys dancing with nothing but her shoulders, doing front flips off the couch (i.e. giving Mommy and Aunt Beca heart attacks) and dazzling people with the sweetest laugh you've ever heard in your life. She has yet to sit still for a picture with Aunt Beca.
Friend since Brad was born
My brother, Brad, and I couldn’t be more opposite. Growing up, he was the mild-mannered, All-American kid, while I was the rebellious skater punk. Like all big brothers do, I picked on Brad a lot when we were kids. But that ended once he realized he was bigger than me and could toss me around like a rag doll. I’m so proud of the man that he’s become and am grateful to have him standing next to me on my wedding day as my best man.
Brad lives in Houston with his awesome wife, Jessica, and their 3 rug rats, Hudson, Wren and Jessie.
Friend since junior high
Donavon and I met in 6th grade, waaaay back in 1986 (which is a year before my fiance was born, BTW). I guess you could say we were the rebels of our private school with our long hair and piercings (the tattoos came later). Young and reckless and inseparable through Jr. High and high school, Donavon and I have been through a lot together—a lot of which I shouldn’t mention here. Now, 28 years later we’re not as young and we’re a lot less reckless, but I’m proud to still be able to call him one of my best friends.
Donavon temporarily resides in Dumas, TX, but he’s got his sights set on a quiet, secluded plot of land in Arkansas that’s far from the fast pace of the city.
Friend since right after high school
Dave and I have often joked that his life could be a movie—most of the stories he can tell you seem too far-fetched to actually be real. Lucky for him I can corroborate most of them. One of the stories we relive a lot is when I went with him and his band on tour for two weeks in the summer of ’95. If traveling across the southwest U.S. with 5 other long-haired guys in a van with no AC doesn’t sound like a good time, then I’d say you haven’t really lived. It’s been 20 years and I can honestly say that my life is more interesting with Dave in it.
Dave and his wife Val are both librarians at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX. Yep, there’s a story behind that.
Friend since undergrad at UNT
I met Nick at UNT. Actually, I met him when he interviewed for the job that I had just gotten in the summer of 2000, just before we began the hazing that is known as the communication design program at UNT. The rest, as they say, is history. Thanks to Nick for sneaking those tasty breakfast sandwiches from the cafeteria for me, for keeping me awake through those long all nighters and for single handedly getting me through 4 years of undergrad with most of my sanity intact.
Nick and his wife Lindsay have globtrotted around the world, living in Japan for a few years and, most recently, Columbia where their beautiful baby girl, Iona was born. They’re currently slumming it in Maybank, TX, but only until they make their next move to Mexico.
Friend since 2006- my first advertising job
Nathan and I met at our first advertising jobs out of college. At first we were merely colleagues, but quickly bonded over the dysfunction of the agency we worked at…and later over advertising in general. Nathan’s a proud typography nerd who makes practical applications for the web. Over the years I’ve been fortunate to work alongside Nathan and have learned a lot from him along the way.
Nathan and his wife Rhonda just moved back to Texas after a few years living abroad in Wales. He may just be at his happiest if he’s taking in a good wrestling match while enjoying a glass of scotch and a nice cigar.
Friend since grad school at UNT
Jeff was my drinking, camping, hiking and rebel-rousing partner-in-crime in grad school. I'm not sure if he realizes it, but Jeff is the one to thank (or blame) for Beca and I being together today. The three of us would meet up at our favorite bar after class and when Jeff was ready to leave, I would volunteer Beca to drive me home- it was all part of my plan to make her fall in love with me. So thanks to my wingman, Jeff. Without you we may not have ended up here today.
Jeff lives in Blacksburg, VA and is recently engaged to his fiancé, Elham. Couldn't be happier to see my boy so happy. Whoo Hoo!
Friend since grad school at UNT
Dennis was the guy that made all of us look bad in grad school without even trying—but he somehow managed to make me a better person in the process. He’s one of the smartest, most genuine, people I know. Dennis is a top-notch researcher and educator, and he knows entirely too much about Texas, Star Trek, and Nascar for his own good. HBDC!
Dennis lives in Oxford, OH with his wife, Amy and their kiddos, Isaac and Hazel (my honorary nephew and niece). I miss pizza Friday’s at Dave & Busters!
Friend since I started diggin' his sister ;)
Gabe, my future brother-in-law, is a man of very few words. In the time that I’ve known Gabe I’ve been able to experience his affinity for chickens, doomsday survival tactics and tiny houses. He was a tough nut to crack in the beginning, but his quick wit and sense of humor eventually shined through. Welcome to the family, Gabe!
Hudson (aka mini-me) is a dancing, talking, Beca-loving machine and I can't imagine my life without the little turd.
